Kerala Backwaters
Drift through a green world of palms and paddy fields
India · South India
Backwaters, tea hills and the slow art of living well
Overview
Kerala unfolds gently — houseboats drifting through palm-fringed canals, misty tea estates in Munnar, spice gardens, Ayurveda and a coastline shaped by centuries of trade.
A classic Kerala journey moves through three landscapes. Begin in Kochi, where Chinese fishing nets, Portuguese churches and a historic Jewish quarter reflect the port's trading past. Climb into the Western Ghats to Munnar's tea estates and Thekkady's spice plantations, then descend to the backwaters around Alleppey and Kumarakom for a night aboard a private houseboat.
Life on the backwaters is unhurried: villagers paddle to market, kingfishers dart along the banks and the cook prepares karimeen fried fish and fresh appams on board. We work with carefully selected houseboat operators and recommend single-bedroom boats for couples and premium multi-cabin boats for families.
Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, and many resorts offer authentic programmes under qualified doctors — from a short rejuvenation to a fourteen-day treatment. End your journey on the beaches of Marari or Varkala, where the pace slows even further.
