3-Day Recommended Itinerary

Day 1: The Iconic Western Group

  • Morning: Focus on the Western Group of Temples (UNESCO site). These are the most famous and well-preserved. Highlights include the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple and the Lakshmana Temple.

  • Afternoon: Visit the Archaeological Museum nearby to see recovered sculptures and artifacts.

  • Evening: Attend the Light and Sound Show (narrated by Amitabh Bachchan in the Hindi version). In October, the English show typically starts around 6:30 PM and the Hindi show around 7:40 PM.

Day 2: Eastern/Southern Groups & Local Life

  • Morning: Hire an auto or rent a bicycle to visit the Eastern Group (Jain temples like Parsvanath and Adinath) and the Southern Group (Duladeo and Chaturbhuj temples). These are more spread out and peaceful.

  • Afternoon: Visit the Matangeshwar Temple—the only temple where active worship still takes place.

  • Evening: Walk through the local Khajuraho village or explore the Old Town market for handicrafts and stone carvings.

Day 3: Nature & Waterfalls

  • Morning: Take a half-day excursion (20km away) to Raneh Falls. In October, the waterfalls are still active from the monsoon, and the canyon’s colorful igneous rocks are stunning.

  • Optional: If you have more time, combine this with a quick safari at Panna National Park (30km away).

  • Afternoon: Final souvenir shopping before heading to the airport or railway station.

Travel Tips for October

  • Photography: The light in October is crisp; arrive at the Western Group at 6:00 AM (opening time) for the best photos without the crowds.

  • Footwear: You will need to remove your shoes at many temple plinths; wear slip-ons and bring a pair of socks if the stone is too warm/cool for your feet.

  • Booking: October is the start of the peak season, so book your hotels at least 3–4 weeks in advance.
